What is Trauma? We hear that word so much these days. Why does it matter when I am seeking out a therapist? I wasn't traumatized. My problems are different. My wife and I fight all the time, I am thinking about having an affair, my kids are acting out. None of this has to do with trauma, Does It? Guess what, we are learning that it does. We store memories in our bodies (read the Body Keeps The Score by Besel Van der Kolk). As a result when events happen, in particular when you are very vulnerable ie....as a child; that make you feel unsafe, at risk or in danger we experience some form of trauma, big or small. We develop coping skills or survival strategies. Our survival strategies then become obsolete as we get into new situations or become more capable of taking care of ourselves. However, if we don't address our trauma it stays with us until we do and avoiding it causes more problems. We fool ourselves into thinking we don't really have a problem, others do. Even worse we act on those beliefs and do something really hurtful to the people we love. Working with a therapist who understands trauma and can help you transform it is essential to healing.
